Research Methods

HSPA students must take three classes in research methods: two in statistical methods and one in research design.  Most students choose to take more than this minimum, given the importance of empirical research in the HSPA field and the increasing sophistication of available methods.

Statistical methods courses are offered in many departments across the campus.  Students in the economics field often choose to take ARE 210/212/213.  Students in organizations and politics/policy often take PS231A/231B/233.  Many will supplement these with additional applied econometrics and specialized courses.

There is great flexibility in meeting the research design requirement; students are strongly encouraged to take PH 250B.  Some of the statistical methods courses also are in the list of approved research design courses (though a student cannot use the same course towards both requirements).

Students are also required to demonstrate competency in epidemiology; students without previous epidemiology coursework may choose to satisfy both the epidemiology requirement and the research design requirement by taking PH 250A or PH 250B.
