Health Economics

All HSPA students are required to take at least two courses from the list of economics core classes.  Students in all specialty fields are also expected to have prior familiarity with Master’s-level health economics concepts; those without such background should take PH226A or equivalent in addition to core courses.

Students in the organizations and politics/policy fields with no previous economics background often choose to take PP 210A,B.  Those with prior economics coursework or with stronger mathematical skills are recommended to take Econ 101A plus a more advanced course such as PH 226E.

Students in the economics specialty field are required to take 5 economics courses (at least two of which must be on the core list), though most choose to take more than this.  Graduate microeconomics ECON 201A must be one of these courses (preceded by summer math pre-requisites).  Economics students must also take a two-course doctoral sequence in either public finance, labor, industrial organization, or development/demography.  In addition, economics students are encouraged to take one or both of the doctoral health economics courses PH226E/F.
