The HSPA PhD Program is an academic program of the Graduate Division and is housed within the School of Public Health. The Director is appointed for a two-year term from among members of the core faculty and also serves as the HSPA Head Graduate Advisor. The Program is also governed by an Executive Committee comprised of the Director and three other members of the faculty group plus three or four volunteer student members. The day-to-day functions of the PhD program are managed by the Program Manager who is responsible for coordinating information between Graduate Division, the School of Public Health, the HSPA Faculty Group, and Students.
The mission of the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Health Services and Policy Analysis (HSPA) is to prepare students for careers in research, teaching, and public services in university, governmental, and public policy settings. It is expected that through their research, teaching, and provision of expert advice Berkeley graduates will play a leadership role in addressing the many challenges facing the health care system.
Health Services and Policy Analysis Ph.D. students must register at Berkeley and complete a minimum of four semesters of academic residence. A full-time graduate student must enroll in 12 or more units; this includes students who hold GSR / GSI appointments and all fellowship and traineeship recipients. A minimum of 60 units is required to complete the program.
