Overview
The doctoral program in Health Services and Policy Analysis is distinguished by its application of the social science disciplines to real world health issues. Students select a major area of concentration from among health economics, organizations, or political science/policy while receiving exposure to all three areas. They have access to all of the social science disciplines and professional schools at the University of California , Berkeley , in addition to the core resources provided by the School of Public Health . Students also receive a thorough grounding in research methods and the application of these methods to the analysis of health policy issues.
The core faculty group for the HSPA Program are professors in the School of Public Health, however, the larger faculty group is comprised of experts in departments and schools across the Berkeley campus. This interdisciplinary approach to health services research is a key aspect of the Ph.D. program and enables students to tailor some of their coursework to their own research interests.
The location of Berkeley’s campus has allowed HSPA students the unique opportunity to work and collaborate with professionals at educational and research institutions in Northern California, including UC San Francisco, Kaiser Permanente, Veteran’s Administration, and Sutter Health Institute.
Alumni of the Health Services and Policy Analysis program are employed across the United States and internationally as professors and/or researchers in leading universities and colleges, government organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, and international organizations such as the World Bank.
